VTF & Consciousness: How Gaps in Awareness Create Tension and New Understanding

When experience does not fit expectation, something has to happen.

There may be countless things we don’t know.

Most never bother us.

Practical insight: When something repeatedly confuses you, don’t immediately treat the confusion as failure. Ask: “What is this confusion showing me that my current understanding cannot explain?”

2. Tension Is the Energy of the Question

A question that doesn’t matter creates little movement. A question that matters can keep you awake at night.

Why?

Because not all gaps are equal.

You might not know the population of a distant country, and nothing inside you moves.

But if you don’t understand why someone you love has become distant, the gap feels different.

If you don’t understand why your career suddenly feels empty, it feels different.

Your current model feels inadequate.

You search for a better model.

They force a confrontation between what we thought reality was and what reality appears to be.

We rationalise.

We deny.

We blame.

But premature relief can prevent learning.

Don’t assume the answer is “make the feeling stop.”

Sometimes the better answer is “understand what created it.”


3. Adaptation Begins When the Old Explanation Stops Working

This is where consciousness becomes adaptive.

Imagine you believe that a particular colleague dislikes you.

Then one day you discover that the person has been dealing with a serious family problem.

Adaptation does not always mean changing the external environment.

Sometimes it means changing the model through which we understand the environment.

Human beings don’t experience every event in a purely raw, uninterpreted form.

We interpret.

If a gap simply disappears, we might call that information acquisition.

“I need to become more disciplined.”

The original problem has become a doorway.

The capacity to recognise “I don’t understand this yet” is itself a form of cognitive awareness.

That small phrase contains enormous potential.

Not:

“I don’t understand this, therefore I can’t.”

But:

“I don’t understand this yet.”

The word yet changes the relationship with the gap.

The vacuum becomes temporary.

The tension becomes motivational.

Adaptation becomes possible.

Emergence becomes imaginable.

6. The Most Powerful Vacuum May Be the One Inside Us

There is another kind of gap that can transform a life: the distance between who we are and who we believe we should be.

A person can possess enormous amounts of information and still experience an internal vacuum.

They may know how to succeed.

But not why.

They may know what others expect.

But not what they value.

They may know how to perform.

But not how to be.

They may have a carefully constructed identity that works externally but feels increasingly empty internally.

This is a consciousness gap.

The person has developed an external model of life that no longer matches their internal experience.

And tension follows.

“Why am I unhappy when everything looks successful?”

“Why does this achievement feel strangely empty?”

“Why am I living a life I once wanted but no longer recognise?”

These questions can become uncomfortable.

But they can also become transformative.

The vacuum reveals a mismatch.

The tension demands attention.

Adaptation requires re-examining assumptions.

Emergence may produce a different way of living.

This is why personal crises can sometimes become periods of extraordinary psychological development.

Not because suffering is automatically good.

It isn’t.

And VTF should never be interpreted as saying that trauma or hardship is somehow necessary for growth.

Rather, the framework proposes that when a disruption creates a gap between our existing model and lived experience, adaptation becomes necessary.

The outcome can vary enormously.

Sometimes people adapt constructively.

Sometimes they become more rigid.

Sometimes they need support from others.

Sometimes professional help is essential.

There is no guaranteed positive outcome.

But the possibility of emergence remains.

VTF Principle

A meaningful life requires enough awareness to notice when your internal model no longer matches your lived reality.

That is self-awareness in action.

Not merely knowing your personality.

Not merely identifying your strengths.

But noticing the contradictions between:

what you believe,

what you experience,

what you value,

and

how you actually live.

Practical insight: Once a week, ask yourself: “Where is there a gap between what I say matters to me and what my behaviour suggests matters to me?” Don’t judge the answer. Investigate it.


7. The Consciousness Cycle: A Practical VTF Model

If awareness is adaptive, we can make the process visible.

1. Perception

Something enters awareness.

An event.

A sensation.

3. Tension

It offers a way to think about:

Great education does not simply deliver answers.

It creates productive questions.

The teacher introduces a gap between what the learner knows and what they could understand.

The gap generates curiosity.

Curiosity drives investigation.

Investigation produces learning.

Learning creates new questions.

The classroom becomes a field of emergence.

Leadership

Leaders constantly encounter gaps:

But when the goal is learning, premature closure can be costly.

Research into cognitive flexibility and metacognition supports the broader idea that effective learning involves monitoring and adjusting one’s thinking rather than simply accumulating information.

Not endless questioning.

Not doubting everything.

What information, context, or awareness is absent?

Why has this particular absence become significant?

What story am I telling myself about what is happening?

What assumptions are embedded in that story?

What evidence supports it?

These questions turn consciousness from passive observation into active inquiry.

We often imagine knowledge as the filling of empty spaces.

But perhaps that picture is incomplete.

Sometimes the empty space comes first.

A question.

A contradiction.

A mystery.

A failure.

A feeling we cannot explain.

A reality that doesn’t fit our model.

The gap appears.

Then comes tension.

The tension demands attention.

Attention creates inquiry.

Inquiry creates adaptation.

Adaptation creates a new way of seeing.
